June 2023

This is our twelfth email update for the DEVELOP project. It is not a monthly email, as before, because somehow I missed three entire months. So, it is a Spring 2023 Update and perhaps we will just go to quarterly updates…? But let me know if you need to hear from me more often and I will be sure to send you lots more emails.

UPDATES:

  • We have a new team member!: Joel Schneider, a postdoc in Kelly Lane’s lab group at the University of Minnesota.
  • Kelly and Joel both joined us in Bergen in May/June to work on an initial manuscript from last year’s focus-group findings, plan our module assessment, and experience two weeks of improbably perfect weather in Bergen. It was so great having them join us, and we are lucky to have their expertise guiding the project.
  • We have begun to work on module construction. Jonathan has built the scaffolding for the modules’ website, and we (Jonathan, Gaute, Lucas, Kristin, Truls, Emma, Sanne, Benjamin, Helge, and Niklas) had an initial meeting last week to start planning the next steps. Our aim is to have some modules ready for input (a “soft” pilot) during the Fall term, and then to have an official pilot, for formal assessment, in Winter 2024. If you are interested in giving input to these modules, please contact Gaute or Jonathan.
  • We have administered some short “student input” surveys to students in our different work-practice courses. Our hope is to use some of this input (to prompts such as “what challenges did you face during your work-practice experience, and how did you resolve them?”) to lend authenticity to the modules we are creating.

UPCOMING:

  • We will be meeting regularly with the module-development team, ideally starting in early August.
  • We plan to create several short (<2 minutes) modules that correspond to stages in the work-practice experience. One idea is to use student quotes and student narrators, along with some embedded interactivity to make the messages easier to digest.
